How to Create a Custom Golf Cart

The use of golf carts for personal travel and recreation is on the rise. As an example, some neighborhoods today allow residents to travel within the neighborhood in their own golf cart, and a many parents are choosing to get their children golf carts, rather than more powerful and accident-prone 4-wheelers. As with cars, trucks, and motorcycles, there are those people who want to stand out with a custom golf cart. Here we will look at several options to choose from to customize yours.

The simplest, easiest, and least expensive way to customize is with decals – durable stickers that you can put right on the body of the cart. You can easily find a printer and give them an image (for example: your name, a logo, a picture) to a local print shop and they can create a decal for you, which you can apply yourself. The cost should be $20 – $30 per sticker.

If you want to spend a little more on the body, you can always order a custom paint job, but it will cost you. Expect to pay $400 – $600. To take it a step further, you can special order a body kit that looks like a Hummer, a Cadillac Escalade, or a Porche, and I’m sure their are other styles available.

Another relatively expensive, but very popular modification is to put a lift kit on your golf cart to raise the height of the vehicle by a few inches. However, if you plan to lift your vehicle, you should also expect to add custom wheels and tires. A lifted golf cart with basic little turf wheels and tires just doesn’t look right, but lifted with larger off-road tires and custom rims can make your cart look like more than a golf cart…it can look like a small truck or suv. Together, these two customizations will cost between $800 – $1,500.

Other add-ons you can get to customize your golf cart are front and rear lights, brake lights, fog lights, turn signals, a horn, and a stereo system, just to name a few.

I have been asked on several occasions if golf carts can be made street legal. They can, but you should check with your local DMV because at a minimum, you will need to acquire and register a new VIN, install seat belts, lights, and turn signals. Most states will also require you to carry insurance on the vehicle.
